MLK DAY ART CONTEST 2024

CELEBRATING MLK: JUSTICE, INCLUSION, AND THE ARTS

OPEN CALL FOR ART SUBMISSIONS (due no later than January 7, 2024 @11:59pm)

To celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s 95th birthday, the Glastonbury MLK Community Initiative invites Glastonbury residents from diverse artistic backgrounds (e.g. visual, performance, etc.) of all levels to submit works that resonate with the themes of social justice and inclusivity. Selected submissions will be displayed at our annual MLK Birthday Celebration on Monday, January 15, 2024. There will be five $100 cash prizes in the following categories:

  1. Best solo submission (under 18 years old)
  2. Best collaborative submission (under 18 years old)
  3. Best solo submission (18 years old +)
  4. Best collaborative submission (18 years old +)
  5. Best inspirational submission overall (all ages)

We encourage submissions from amateur and professional Glastonbury artists, including K-12 students and college students who attend(ed) Glastonbury schools. The GLMKCI Board of Directors will review and select the submissions.

ELIGIBLITY AND SUBMISSION GUIDELINE: 

*Must be Glastonbury resident, or student who attend/attended Glastonbury schools.

Exhibit’s Theme: Celebrating MLK: Justice, Inclusion, and the Arts

Work Media: Single medium, mixed media, multimedia, solo and collaborative work

Work Size: 4x4x4 max; 50lbs max; for audio-visual and performance work 5 min. max

Entry Requirements:

  1. Artist must reside in Glastonbury. If collaborative work, at least one member of the collaboration must reside or attend(ed) school in Glastonbury.
  2. Artist may submit up to 2 pieces for consideration.
  3. Artist must explicitly address the connections between the submission(s) and the theme of the exhibition “Celebrating MLK: Justice, Inclusion, and the Arts” (500 words max).
  4. Five digital images of artwork from different angles in JPEG format, provide dimensions of artwork, with image size set to 300 dpi or higher resolution. For audio-visual and performance works, submit a high-resolution audio-video capture no more than 5 min. long.
  5. Artist’s contact information (full name, address, email, phone). Parent or legal guardian’s contact info if artist is a minor. Teacher’s contact info if submission is from a class.

Notification to Artist: Tuesday, January 9, 2024

Artwork Delivery Date for Exhibit: TBD (selected artists will be contacted)

Reception: Smith Middle School

Exhibit or Event Ends: @6pm on January 15, 2024 at Smith Middle School

Pickup Artwork by: January 15 @6pm at Smith Middle School
